This is a 6-week throwing course for those looking to get familiar with the wheel, or develop their throwing skills further. Students will learn::
The cycle of clay from start to finish and information about types of clay and firings
How to centre the clay and form a pot on the potter's wheel.
- we will begin by focusing on developing strong key throwing skills - centring, lifting, shaping (cylinders and bowls) and finishing on the wheel.
- an experienced and skilled tutor will expand by teaching more complex shapes and with bigger weights of clay dependant on each student's ability.
- turning (trimming) a pot - this is the method of finishing and finessing thrown work once leather hard (partly dried) by returning it to the wheel and removing excess clay using a metal tool.
Pulling handles to give your pots extra functionality and style.
Creating your own makers mark to stamp your pots with.
Surface decoration - carving and slip decoration techniques
How to glaze your pots to achieve the best finish with our wide selection of unique, in-house studio glazes.
What is provided?
Materials, glazes and tools are provided throughout the course.
Each student will have their own wheel to work on for the entire course.
Clay is charged at £3 per kg (pots are only weighed once finished and ready for firing, clay for throwing practice is unlimited.)
What should I bring?
Please bring an apron or an old shirt, a towel, a pen and a notepad.
We have a wide selection of tools available but you may wish to bring your own if you have them.
